The disaster in Haiti has caused, how could it be otherwise, a wave of solidarity.
However, in a country that remains the poorest part of the American continent in which more than half of the population is under 18 years, it is imperative to give special attention to the needs of Haitian children .
So I think especially important to emphasize the four basic needs for action in terms of humanitarian support (according to UNICEF ):
• First, emergency humanitarian aid in all areas should focus on keep children and girls alive. This means, clean water, adequate sanitation, basic nutrition and routine medical care. This is basic to what we can not renounce.[ read the full story in UNICEF ]
• Second, care for children separated from their families . Throughout the region, we find the children who have lost their families, identify and reunite with relatives and their communities.
• Third, our efforts in all places should ensure that children and girls are protected from exploitation . In a mess like this, when families are separated, when they lose their sources of income, when dignity and hope are scarce, children are more vulnerable to abuse.
• Finally, we help children cope with their traumas bringing them back to school as quickly as possible . There is no such clear signal of hope and rebuild and reopen schools. (...) It may seem to go back to school is an afterthought in an emergency situation or "normal life" is not important after a disaster. (...) Incredibly, routine every day is the most that can help a child overcome a situation as difficult as the collapse of their world .
